« Le Jour de l’italienne est un spectacle-confidence né de l’envie d’une équipe de faire partager sa passion et de dévoiler, avec humour, dérision et sincérité, les rouages du processus de répétitions », déclare la jeune metteure en scène Sophie Lecarpentier. Un processus que les membres de la compagnie Eulalie ont tenté de recréer collectivement par le biais d’une petite comédie fondée sur le principe du théâtre dans le théâtre. Passant, en 1H10, par les principales étapes qui pourraient constituer l’élaboration d’une représentation de L’Epreuve de Marivaux (depuis la première rencontre « à la table » entre les comédiens, jusqu’au soir de la générale), Sophie Lecarpentier et ses camarades de troupe empruntent, à toute vitesse, les chemins les plus convenus et les plus attendus d’un cadre de création dramatique. Lumières, costumes, décor, mises en perspective psychologiques des personnages, travail de direction d’acteur, décryptage de certains termes du jargon théâtral (on nous explique, notamment, ce qu’est une italienne et comment mémoriser le côté cour et le côté jardin)… C’est toute la petite cuisine du théâtre qui est au centre du Jour de l’italienne. Une petite cuisine qui ne parvient qu’à donner corps à un spectacle didactique et stéréotypé.

Si, comme nous l’explique la metteure en scène, l’humour, la dérision et la sincérité sont au programme de cette représentation, le théâtre, lui, semble bien loin du champ d’investigation de ces personnages-comédiens. S’enfermant dans une vision technicienne et anecdotique de la mécanique théâtrale, les huit interprètes passent à côté de tout ce qui constitue l’essence et le mystère de l’art dramatique, de la mise en scène, du jeu de comédien. Car, le spectacle de la compagnie Eulalie n’est, en fait, ni plus ni moins qu’une petite comédie de café-théâtre. Le Jour de l’italienne reproduit en effet les codes de ce genre spécifique et butte sur ses limites : facilité du propos, efficacité humoristique, usage systématique de la parodie, propension à l’inventaire, aux raccourcis et aux idées reçues… Bien sûr, les amateurs de ce type de performances devraient s’en donner à cœur joie, apprenant même peut-être, à l’occasion, quelques recettes théâtrales. Mais les autres, spectateurs venus pour davantage de profondeur, risquent tout simplement, devant la légèreté de cette création collective, de ne pas se sentir à leur place.
