Dans Le Jour où Nina Simone a cessé de chanter, une autobiographie écrite à quatre mains avec Mohamed Kacimi, Darina al-Joundi narre une adolescence de chaos sous les bombes de Beyrouth. Aux yeux de l’héroÏne, le seul homme reconnu est le père. La jeune fille vit sans papiers avec ses deux sœurs au Liban, pays où elles sont nées pourtant. Leur mère libanaise ne peut pas, en fonction de la loi qui règne dans tous les pays arabes, transmettre en tant que femme sa nationalité. Le père adulé est un réfugié politique syrien, titulaire d’une carte de séjour renouvelable tous les trois mois, journaliste, poète, écrivain et avant tout libre-penseur, ce qui lui vaut des condamnations politiques et la prison en Syrie. N’appartenant à aucune communauté ni confession, il met sa fille dans une école chrétienne et lui défend l’écoute des sourates du Coran à son enterrement. Beyrouth est avant la Guerre civile une ville libre, une oasis, un joyeux bordel ; c’est aussi la capitale de l’OLP. Soudain, la guerre sourde éclate à Beyrouth Est avant de s’étendre à l’Ouest.
Le récit nu d’un paradis d’enfance et d’un cauchemar de jeunesse.
C’est alors qu’avec la guerre et son enfer commence pour Darina une vie d’excès, goûtant outre mesure à l’alcool, au sexe, à la cocaïne, un apprentissage de boîte de nuit qui l’anéantit en la conduisant du côté de la folie et de ses résonances mortifères. Cette figure de l’émancipation a osé toutes les quêtes, « droguée, pute, folle, lesbienne, athée », passant par les fourches caudines de l’innommable violence masculine, terreur de panache macho soumis aux traditions religieuses et familiales. Une fois son père mort, Darina subit un passage à tabac dans un club nocturne par des brutes garantes de la morale tandis que la sono crache Siner Man de Nina Simone. Elle est une victime gisante : « les hommes détournaient le regard comme s’ils ne me connaissaient pas, tous mes amis de vingt ans, je n’existais plus ». L’horreur de l’existence n’accorde pas la liberté féminine revendiquée mais la perte des repères, le sentiment de la trahison, l’abandon des proches, l’extrême solitude. La parole est incarnée par la femme blessée. Darina al-Joundi fait le récit nu d’un paradis d’enfance et d’un cauchemar de jeunesse. Le spectateur adhère à sa confession intime, sûr de l’authenticité de sa passion pour une vie hors de la vulgarité et des mensonges. Moment sublime.
