En 1900, Le journal d’une femme de chambre d’Octave Mirbeau a fait l’effet d’une bombe et a connu un succès immense grâce à son audace, à son témoignage sincère et libéré de toute pudibonderie conventionnelle, quant au récit du traitement réservé aux gens de maison, qui plus est, quand elles sont femmes. Le romancier prête sa plume à Célestine – interprétée majestueusement par la comédienne Natacha Amal dans la mise en scène de Jonathan Duverger -, une femme de chambre, l’auteur présumé du journal. C’est une dénonciation impertinente et en règle du sombre univers du petit personnel féminin de la « belle Époque ». La femme de chambre silencieuse, obéissante, toute la journée au service de ses maîtres, bridée dans le costume ancillaire, ouvre son cœur le soir venu. C’est à ce moment-là qu’elle renaît à elle-même, enjouée et réactive. Seule en scène, Natacha Amal interprète avec fougue et conviction les épreuves et les amours d’une figure féminine qui pourrait contrôler son existence.
