Dans un tranquille village d’Ukraine, au début du XXème siècle, Russes, Polonais, Ukrainiens, juifs et orthodoxes coexistent en paix. Du moins jusqu’au jour où la communauté juive, assignée à résidence par les autorités nationales, se voit contrainte à l’exil. « Tout commence comme un petit conte populaire, révèle Youlia Zimina, une machine à jouer excessivement drôle qui évoque le paradis perdu d’une période lumineuse. Et puis, la rupture a lieu, une césure que j’ai voulu signifier par un changement d’esthétique. » Passant d’un décor représentant une baraque de foire, dans laquelle s’entassent joyeusement les comédiens, à un espace ouvert quasiment vide, la metteure en scène d’origine russe ouvre la seconde dimension de sa représentation sur une vision de l’être humain seul face à lui-même. « Le temps s’arrête et une grande question se pose, explique-t-elle, comment continuer, comment vivre le lendemain ? Bien sûr, cette partie prend une teinte plus sombre, mais le fameux “Ailleurs, ce ne sera pas pire” permet l’éternelle renaissance de l’espoir humain. »
