Dans une ambiance de laboratoire déjanté et secret, saturé de formol, mixtures, tubes à essai et grimoires, règne le bien-nommé professeur Illman, voué tout entier à sa quête scientifique, recherche devant permettre selon lui de sauver le monde. Il apostrophe souvent sa mère, dont le cerveau fermente dans un bocal. Flanqué de son acolyte dévoué Crameur, dont on se demande s’il ne va pas devenir cobaye, il expérimente ses potions sur des rats de laboratoire. Ivre de sa foi scientifique et de ses certitudes, le savant fou symbolise la folie d’un dogmatisme infaillible et « la perversion du pouvoir », selon la metteur en scène Angélique Friant, comédienne issue de la Comédie de Reims, qui s’est impliquée dans divers travaux sur les masques et la marionnette, notamment avec la compagnie Pseudonymo de David Girondin Moab, aussi à Avignon cet été. Les rats sont ici des marionnettes qui parlent et fomentent même une évasion. Avec deux acteurs et deux manipulateurs, le spectacle alterne moments de peur, de suspense et de drôlerie à l’anglaise.
