En 1895, Marius Petipa reprend la partition du Lac des Cygnes de Tchaikovski, créée en 1877. Il en fait un chef-d’oeuvre, dont la version de Noureev – que présente aujourd’hui le Ballet de l’Opéra – donne une lecture freudienne : le prince Siegfried, qui fuit la réalité, découvre un lac imaginaire et tombe amoureux d’Odette, transformée en cygne blanc par un mauvais génie. Il jure de l’épouser. Mais il tombe ensuite dans le piège d’Odile, la fille du génie, qui prend l’allure d’un cygne noir : trompé par la ressemblance des deux femmes, il lui offre son amour et provoque la mort d’Odette. La danseuse principale incarne d’abord la femme-cygne, en pleine métamorphose, entre deux états ; puis elle devient Odile et investit un caractère on ne peut plus différent. Un défi physique et dramatique, qui donne toute la mesure du talent des interprètes.
