2 août 1914. Empoignant le linge, maniant le battoir et frottant la brosse, rassemblées par le rituel et le labeur de la lessive, onze lavandières libèrent leurs paroles et leurs émotions, expriment leurs douleurs et leurs espoirs. Le Lavoir de Dominique Durvin et Hélène Prévost a rencontré après sa création en 1986 à Avignon un succès international. Ce texte donne vie aux voix des lavandières auxquelles la société n’a offert aucune tribune, et la mise en scène de Brigitte Damiens orchestre autour du bassin un spectacle choral d’une formidable acuité, où les histoires simples, dans ce terrifiant contexte de la catastrophe imminente, résonnent étrangement. Protégées par la singularité codifiée de cette cérémonie féminine, unies par leurs difficiles conditions de vie, ces femmes parlent franc, révèlent les petits ou grands événements d’une vie rude, elles s’écoutent, se querellent, se désolent, et rient pour parer le malheur. Surnommé « le moulin à paroles » par les cyniques, le lavoir devient le lieu d’une mémoire populaire universelle, plein de la chaleur d’une humanité vibrante.
