Aimer et rêver mais aussi calculer et estimer, voilà le comportement des êtres humains qui apparient sans vergogne les passions amoureuses avec les manigances, les machinations douteuses, les bas intérêts et les viles questions d’argent. Le Legs et Les Acteurs de bonne foi sont en la matière des objets précieux ciselés, des comédies subversives et joyeuses, légères et cruelles. Qu’est-ce que jouer la comédie de l’amour ? Le jeu l’emporte-t-il toujours sur les vrais sentiments ? Le Legs fait allusion à la fortune dont un Marquis doit hériter mais qu’il devra partager avec sa cousine Hortense s’il ne l’épouse pas, à moins qu’Hortense ne renonce à sa part si elle ne choisit pas de se marier avec son cousin. Or, l’un et l’autre ne s’aiment pas : faut-il pour autant laisser filer l’argent ? Dans Les Acteurs de bonne foi, les domestiques vont jouer une comédie orchestrée par le valet Merlin, le jour des noces d’Angélique et d’Éraste. Mais ils se prennent bien vite au sérieux, et la bouffonnerie bascule dans le psychodrame. Une soirée hautement théâtrale.
