Le Malade imaginaire, c’est Argan l’hypocondriaque qui veut marier sa fille à un médecin, c’est Molière qui meurt sur scène, c’est « Le poumon ! Le poumon ! », c’est un véritable pan du patrimoine national que Philippe Car, ancien des Cartoun Sardines, transforme allègrement en un cirque tourbillonnant. Un acteur incarne Argan et les autres rôles – Cléante, Toinette, Diafoirus, Angélique… – sont partagés en deux partitions. La pièce accélère, des scènes sont jouées en même temps, les pires craintes d’Argan se transforment en visions hallucinatoires et c’est progressivement toute la comédie qui se métamorphose en un circlownesque cauchemar.

Avec une piste de cirque pour décor, les comédiens manipulent d’abord les costumes, façon marionnettes, avant de les endosser. Créé en 1991 et joué plus de 400 fois à travers le monde, le spectacle slalome entre la dérision et la cruauté, et à coup de trouvailles scénographiques, fidèle à l’esprit de Molière, il « célèbre le triomphe de l’amour et de la vie sur la maladie et la mort ».
