Créée en 1925 par Meyerhold, Le Mandat fut interdite dès la fin des
années 1920, tout comme Le Suicidé (1928), seconde et dernière pièce du
dramaturge russe réduit au silence par la dictature soviétique. A travers une
suite de quiproquos et de situations rocambolesques, les personnages du
Mandat, « petits fauteurs de trouble égoïstes et mesquins perdus dans un
monde qui n?est plus le leur », tentent de se sortir au mieux de l’époque
trouble au sein de laquelle ils sont plongés. Bourgeois ruinés par la
révolution, anciens tsaristes encore riches, communistes de façade, arrivistes
de tous bords’ Présentant ces protagonistes loufoques par le biais d’une « scénographie
épurée, symbolique et stylisée », Stéphane Douret souhaite mettre à jour « les
préjugés, les chaos d’idées et de sentiments, la bêtise, et surtout la pesanteur
inouïe d’un passé qui interdit toute adaptation à un nouveau monde ».
