« Je m’appelle Saül Weissmann mais ne vous fiez pas à mon nom qui est juif, en dépit des apparences. J’ai été, pendant soixante-dix ans, un imposteur pour les autres et pour moi-même » : ainsi commence la confession de M. Weissmann, rescapé d’Auschwitz, déporté parce que juif et convaincu de l’être jusqu’à ce qu’un vieux rabbin lui apprenne qu’il ne l’est pas vraiment, si l’on s’en tient à une stricte lecture de la loi mosaïque… Comme le disait Sartre, c’est l’antisémite qui fait le juif, et la question des assignations est flottante, sauf pour ceux qui ont besoin de l’identité pour trier leurs frères humains. On voit donc le pauvre Weissmann se démener pour savoir qui il est entre « un rabbin orthodoxe, une femme difforme, un marabout africain, des médecins, des policiers et une belle infirmière ». Cette pièce « parle d’identité et met en exergue, par son humour corrosif et décalé, la peur de l’étranger. En filigrane c’est une histoire universelle qui se raconte », dit Salomé Lelouch, qui la met en scène.
