Ayant amassé fortune et années à l’étranger, Sganarelle revient en France pour se marier. Il s’éprend de Dorimène, fille du seigneur Alcantor, qui est prête à convoler à condition de demeurer libre sous le joug. Sganarelle, qui a pris conseils auprès des philosophes et diseuses de bonne aventure, s’apprête à rompre le contrat mais finit par céder, le couteau sous la gorge, et se retrouve en même temps époux et cocu. Ecrite avec Lully pour les Plaisirs de l’Ile enchantée, cette pièce, définie par son auteur comme une « comédie-mascarade » se plait à railler l’institution maritale et venge toutes les filles contraintes d’offrir leur jeunesse à des barbons libidineux. Pierre Pradinas enferme comédiens-chanteurs dans une boîte noire symbolisant l’enfermement mental des personnages, l’étroitesse d’esprit d’une société garrottée par la bêtise de ses mœurs et les cauchemars du pauvre Sganarelle. Dom Farkas et Thierry Payen signent des musiques adaptées de la partition originale de Lully, participant ainsi, à l’instar de tous les membres de l’équipe artistique, à une relecture dynamique de cette œuvre.
