Le Martyre de Saint-Sébastien est une œuvre que l’on dit mal-aimée. Tantôt l’on blâme la préciosité du poème de Gabriele d’Annunzio, tantôt l’on remarque des longueurs ou une orchestration hâtive dans la musique de Debussy. Pourtant, l’orchestre et ses deux plus récents directeurs musicaux y semblent attachés : Kurt Masur avait dirigé ce « mystère en cinq actes » avant même de débuter son mandat ; Daniele Gatti le reprend, dans sa version intégrale, pour sa première année à la tête du National. Ce n’est pas un hasard : l’œuvre compte quelques pages parmi les plus belles du compositeur (tout l’esprit de Debussy est dans les premiers accords du premier acte) et les Fragments symphoniques qu’il en a tirés manquent de la passion que confèrent les longs développements. L’œuvre esthétise le martyre certes, et d’une manière souvent fort ambiguë, mais pas moins, finalement, que ne le fait Mantegna dans ses peintures de Saint Sébastien. L’œuvre avait fait scandale à sa création en 1911, entre autres parce que le rôle du saint était tenu par une femme, (la danseuse Ida Rubinstein). Daniele Gatti ne pouvait pas faire ici de meilleur choix que celui d’Isabelle Huppert.
