De l’Opéra-Studio de Colmar au CNIPAL de Marseille, les lieux de formation pour les jeunes chanteurs ont le grand mérite d’accompagner la transition souvent délicate entre la fin des études et l’entrée dans la vie active. Chaque année, l’Abbaye de Royaumont propose ainsi un stage de perfectionnement axé sur une production lyrique donnée dans des conditions professionnelles. C’est dans ce cadre que l’on a entendu récemment le rare Médecin malgré lui de Gounod. Saluons d’emblée la bonne santé de cette promotion de jeunes chanteurs, tous prometteurs. Leurs voix sont bien placées et dotées d’un timbre séduisant, toujours au service d’une musicalité juste et expressive. Un vrai travail de diction a par ailleurs été accompli. Bien sûr, ils manquent parfois de puissance et d’une vraie personnalité vocale, mais cela viendra avec le temps… Cet ensemble de chanteurs, d’une belle homogénéité, recrée un peu l’esprit de troupe qui a malheureusement disparu de nos opéras. Ce qui est aussi méritoire, c’est la conviction avec laquelle ils se sont investis d’un point de vue théâtral.
Deux temporalités
La mise en scène de Sandrine Anglade insuffle beaucoup de rythme sur le plateau et caractérise avec esprit les différents protagonistes. Son spectacle joue sur deux temporalités, celle de Molière et celle de Gounod, distantes de deux siècles. Un parti pris intéressant mais qui ne convainc pas esthétiquement. On avoue avoir préféré des mises en scène plus « osées » de Sandrine Anglade, comme sa transposition, à l’Opéra de Tours, de Cosi fan tutte dans l’univers de la télé-réalité. Mais surtout, l’écueil de la production vient de la fosse. L’Orchestre de Picardie sonne mal (problèmes d’équilibre, justesse approximative) et joue sans aucun engagement. Ce n’est pas la direction scolaire de Pascal Verrot qui risque d’apporter la finesse et la légèreté que requiert cette musique. L’œuvre de Gounod mériterait enfin d’être réhabilitée avec un authentique souci stylistique, et non d’être jouée comme une opérette de seconde zone. Cette production montre en tout cas les limites de la politique musicale, obligeant, pour des raisons de proximité géographique, l’abbaye de Royaumont à travailler avec l’Orchestre de Picardie. Les frontières administratives ne sont pas forcément celles de la musique.
