C’est en s’inspirant du Menteur de Pierre Corneille — auteur qui avait lui-même revisité La Verdad sospechosa (La vérité suspecte) de Juan Ruiz de Alarcón — que Carlo Goldoni composa sa propre version du Menteur (Il Bugiardo). Une version qui, certes, reprend le cadre thématique de la pièce française, mais s’en éloigne également pour rejoindre les élans tragi-comiques de la révolution théâtrale à laquelle travailla le dramaturge vénitien (il réforma, au milieu du XVIIIème siècle, les codes traditionnels de la commedia dell’arte). Le Menteur de Carlo Goldoni présente ainsi les dérives d’un jeune homme à la fois pimpant et totalement pathétique (Lelio, interprété par Simon Abkarian), un menteur compulsif qui ne cesse de bafouer la vérité pour subordonner son entourage et le gagner à ses ambitions. « J’ai commencé à mentir et, les mensonges sont choses si fécondes que d’un seul, peuvent en découler plus de cent », avoue le séducteur au terme de cette suite de mystifications. Cent mensonges, ou plutôt cent « spirituelles inventions », qui plongent pères, soupirants et jeunes filles à marier dans un imbroglio amoureux plein de rebondissements.
Toute l’efficacité comique du théâtre de Goldoni
C’est l’Italie des années 1950 que Laurent Pelly a choisi d’investir pour donner corps à une représentation dont l’efficacité comique conquiert immédiatement le public. Une Italie vénitienne — entre lagune, passerelles et terrasses — que le metteur en scène a souhaité associer aux films de Federico Fellini, à leurs « ambiances nocturnes de rue où l’on entend un chat miauler, un couple se disputer, au loin ». L’univers semi obscur, à la fois brumeux et coloré, de la scénographie conçue par Chantal Thomas lie l’espace scénique aux aspects dramaturgiques de cette pièce joyeuse et féroce. Une pièce qui dévoile les mesquineries d’une bourgeoisie prenant part au jeu de l’amour et de l’argent. Au centre d’une distribution dans laquelle Alain Pralon, Eddy Letexier, Jérôme Huguet et Audrey Fleurot se révèlent particulièrement convaincants, Simon Abkarian trouve dans Lelio un tempérament à sa mesure. Jouant avec aisance de sa nature d’histrion gominé, de beau parleur méridional, le comédien assure le spectacle. Cependant, sa manière de ne pas suffisamment éclairer les contradictions, les fragilités d’un personnage qui semble chercher dans le mensonge une façon d’échapper à son existence, restreint quelque peu l’envergure de cette jolie comédie populaire.
