À mi-chemin de la liturgie et du théâtre – ce qui valut à Haendel une attaque en règle des milieux puritains lors de la création londonienne en 1742 – Le Messie est une œuvre directe, simple dans son propos comme dans son découpage, avec ses scènes marquées par des formules musicales (telle la fugue de l’Amen final) qui frappent durablement l’auditeur. Y alternent les airs où l’on retrouve l’homme de théâtre qui avait fait la synthèse de l’art italien de la mélodie et de la musique allemande, les récitatifs et les chœurs, tel le fameux Hallelujah, qui ponctuent avec éclat les trois parties de cet oratorio de la rédemption. De cette œuvre toute pleine d’énergie, William Christie sait mieux que quiconque révéler toutes les articulations. Autour de l’orchestre et du chœur des Arts florissants, il réunit ici une distribution superlative, avec notamment les sopranos Emmanuelle de Negri et Katherine Watson ainsi que le baryton-basse Konstantin Wolff.
