Ecrit sur des extraits de l’Ancien et du Nouveau Testament, Le Messie est l’oratorio le plus joué de Haendel, dont la postérité profane s’est développée en parallèle de son usage – du moins certaines pages – dans les offices, en particulier anglo-saxons. Orienté vers la Rédemption du Christ, il tire sa puissance théâtrale de la seule musique. Au-delà du plus célèbre d’entre eux, « Hallelujah », les chœurs y occupent une place prépondérante (près de la moitié de la partition), et manifestent une saisissante puissance expressive. Sous la houlette de Laurence Equilbey, la richesse de cette inspiration chorale sera mise en valeur par la précision des effectifs d’accentus, soutenus par les pupitres d’Insula orchestra. Mais l’ouvrage recèle également de magnifiques pages solistes, telles « I know my Redeemer liveth » pour soprano ou « He was despised » pour contre-ténor – parties confiées ici à une grande figure du chant français, Sandrine Piau, et une valeur montante, Paul-Antoine Bénos Djian, dans un plateau complété par le ténor Stuart Jackson et la basse Alex Rosen.
