C’est la tendance du moment : les opéras se mettent tous à proposer des mises en scène d’ouvrages sacrés. La saison dernière, le metteur en scène allemand Claus Guth présentait au Theater an der Wien et à l’Opéra de Nancy une version abstraite et poétique du Messie de Haendel. Ce mois-ci, c’est au tour du Théâtre du Châtelet de se lancer dans une lecture scénique de ce même oratorio baroque. Le directeur Jean-Luc Choplin en a confié la mise en scène au plasticien russe Oleg Kulik, connu pour ses travaux expérimentaux et parfois sulfureux (certaines de ses photos avaient été censurées à la Fiac en 2008). Il était déjà venu au Châtelet pour Les Vêpres de la vierge de Monteverdi – un spectacle ésotérique, faisant parfois penser aux rituels d’une secte… Ce qui est sûr, c’est que l’artiste russe traverse une phase d’intenses réflexions mystiques. Le sujet du Messie de Haendel, inspiré de la Bible, ne pouvait donc que lui parler. Dans sa conception visuelle du spectacle, Oleg Kulik s’appuie sur des vidéos de Robert Nortik.
Michel Serres en récitant
Mais l’originalité de cette production ne s’arrête pas à Oleg Kulik. L’œuvre sera en effet donnée avec la participation d’un récitant, en l’occurrence Michel Serres. On peut se demander ce que le philosophe, compagnon de route de Michel Foucault et René Girard, vient faire dans cette aventure. Mystère… Musicalement, autre surprise : Le Messie est ici interprété dans l’orchestration de Mozart. Ce dernier a en effet modifié l’instrumentation haendelienne, en y ajoutant notamment des clarinettes et des cors, ce qui donne une couleur étrangement classique à l’œuvre baroque. Les instruments modernes de l’Orchestre philharmonique de Radio France prendront place dans la fosse, avec à leur tête le chef Hartmut Haenchen, qui vient de terminer la production de Parsifal de Wagner à la Monnaie de Bruxelles, mis en scène par un autre trublion, Romeo Castellucci. Quant à la distribution vocale, elle mise sur des jeunes voix : la soprano Tilman Lichdi, la basse Darren Jeffery… Au final, rien ne permet pour l’instant de savoir si cette production sera une révolution esthétique ou un simple coup marketing.
