Le Misanthrope ou L’Atrabilaire amoureux, la comédie sérieuse de Molière, trouve ses origines dans la philosophie épicurienne. En ce milieu du XVIIème siècle, la Cour et ses mœurs, fondées sur les apparences et l’hypocrisie, sont battues en brèche. Molière a maille à partir non seulement avec quelques grands de la Cour mais aussi avec Armande Béjart, sa jeune épouse changeante et volage. Le titre de la pièce fait communément référence à une personne – ce peut être Molière aussi, mais selon un tour amusé – qui manifeste de l’aversion pour le genre humain. Alceste, le protagoniste sombre et solitaire, évite la société et se montre sévère envers ses contemporains. Or, selon Chamfort, si on en a le goût, l’observation de la société est une étude qui afflige constamment le cœur. Et l’atrabilaire est en effet davantage meurtri qu’il souffre d’un paradoxe dont il a conscience : il aime Célimène, femme éclairée mais coquette et médisante dont les amis sont de petits marquis ridicules bien en cours. Quand son ami Philinte le lui note, Alceste confesse sa faiblesse : « Elle a l’art de me plaire … Mais la raison n’est pas ce qui règle l’amour. » La comédie fait ainsi le constat de sa propre légèreté. L’atrabilaire en viendra à rompre avec la coquette qui ne lui convient pas et se retirera dans ses terres tandis que Célimène, mortifiée par la leçon, n’en continuera pas moins d’attirer autour d’elle de nouveaux galants.
Appâts de la séduction
Rien de grave, si ce n’est l’éternelle ronde humaine des amours. À ce titre, la scénographie de Damien Caille-Perret est inventive avec ses admirables lustres de lumières au-dessus d’un plateau de cuivre glacé et miroitant. Nicolas Liautard a voulu donner un coup de balai aux clichés de la pièce. Le Misanthrope (Sava Lolov) fait figure de beau gars, à la dégaine libre et dégagée, voire frimeuse. Son caractère si peu social l’autorise à se laisser aller à de pittoresques jeux de scène, des signes d’impatience, de colère et d’incivilité face à un monde qui ne le comprend pas. Il danse, fait un numéro de claquettes et grimace en vrai bougon gesticulant, avant de s’éloigner. Philinte, l’honnête homme, est brillamment interprété par Éric Berger qui n’hésite pas à se moquer de son ami en le parodiant et le « singeant ». Oronte (Jean-Christophe Quenon), l’un des prétendants, apporte une certaine gouaille à la fresque. Quant à Célimène (Sterenn Guirriec), elle est à peine vêtue d’une robe glamour et hollywoodienne des années 50, comme si les appâts de la séduction ne devaient se réduire qu’à la contemplation de la chair offerte. René Jasinski parle du Misanthrope comme d’un monde où tout se nivelle par le haut, grâce, esprit, sentiments, en estompant sans les effacer « les tristesses inséparables de la vie ». Ici, tout se nivelle par le bas.
