Alceste aimerait ses semblables s’ils étaient aimables… Mais roués, mesquins, flagorneurs, bas et imbéciles, superficiels et médisants, ils n’ont aucune des vertus que ce parangon de misanthropie pose comme conditions de possibilité de ses attachements. Conditions théoriques s’il en est, car pratiquement, celle qui fait fondre le cœur de l’atrabilaire est une coquette qui se rit de l’héroïsme moral de son soupirant à l’éthique intégriste. Alceste est donc le jouet des paradoxes entre le cœur et la raison et puisque ces paradoxes sont sans âge, Enrico di Giovanni fait le pari de les moderniser en installant Célimène dans un loft contemporain et en faisant en sorte de rendre l’alexandrin audible aux oreilles d’aujourd’hui en cherchant avec les acteurs « le sens, la pensée au travers des mots ». Cette lecture enlevée d’une des plus grandes comédies classiques en fait résonner les échos « dans un monde toujours en pleine mutation où l’individu se cherche et cherche toujours sa place », selon les mots du metteur en scène.
