Comment avez-vous conçu le rôle d’artiste associé ?
Simon McBurney : Depuis deux ans, nous avons beaucoup échangé et partagé avec Hortense Archambault et Vincent Baudriller, directeurs du Festival. Ils sont venus chez moi, à Londres, m’ont retrouvé en tournée, m’ont questionné sur ma démarche, ma vision de l’humain, de la société, ont pris des notes. De ces longues discussions ont émergé des thèmes, des compagnonnages artistiques, qui ont orienté leurs choix de programmation. Est ainsi apparue la question de l’identité et de la mémoire, du décalage entre nos perceptions ou nos croyances et le réel, de la difficulté de se relier au monde dans une époque où se distend la continuité entre le passé et le futur, où nos racines s’effacent sous le poids du présent, survalorisé par le capitalisme consommateur. L’impact du système économique ne se traduit pas seulement socialement, mais influe sur nos modes de pensée, donc sur notre conscience, sujet qui me passionne actuellement. Dans ma recherche, j’essaie de relier plusieurs champs de connaissance et angles de vue pour l’appréhender. Durant un an, j’ai discuté avec des neurologues, des psychologues, des philosophes… pour en cerner le mystère. Mon travail d’artiste, ma responsabilité, consiste à transformer ces idées en une forme théâtrale partagée avec le public.
Comment reliez-vous cette recherche et votre choix de mettre en scène Le Maître et Marguerite ?
S. McB. : Au cœur du roman, et dans sa forme même, se trouve la problématique du vrai et de la fiction, qui traverse également notre conscience, à l’articulation de l’imaginaire, de l’inconscient et du réel. L’écriture emboîte plusieurs histoires qui sont mises en abime et changent de statut les une après les autres, passant d’une fiction racontée par un personnage au récit principal. Boulgakov écrit sous Staline, dans un système totalitaire qui oblige chacun à croire aux mensonges d’Etat. Le contexte actuel est différent mais nous vivons aussi dans une fiction, fabriquée par les discours politiques, médiatiques ou économiques, plus difficile à déjouer car elle se donne pour la réalité et nous la prenons pour telle.
Comment avez-vous cheminé dans le foisonnement du roman pour construire l’adaptation scénique ?
S. McB. : Avec la troupe, nous avons interrogé le sens, gratté la surface des mots, cherché l’essentiel dans chaque scène, fouillé tous les coins du texte, comme des archéologues. Nous avons peu à peu démonté l’architecture complexe du roman. Au début, c’était le chaos ! Nous avions des fragments partout… Puis nous avons bâti notre version à partir de nos interprétations.
Quel a été votre processus de travail avec la troupe de Complicite, qui rassemble des artistes de nationalités et expériences très diverses ?
S. McB. : Tous les artistes impliqués dans la création se sont retrouvés dans la salle de répétition. Nous avons élaboré un langage théâtral commun propre à ce texte, avec la multiplicité « d’instruments » que nous constituons. Les rôles n’étaient pas attribués au début et se sont définis au cours du processus. Nous avons travaillé sur la notion d’ensemble. Chacun doit appartenir au tout, l’histoire est portée par tous. Nous avons aussi cherché une grammaire gestuelle qui s’appuie sur l’analyse de l’écriture et restitue la grande diversité des styles que déploie Boulgakov dans son roman. Les parcours très différents des acteurs ont donné corps à cette variété.
La Cour d’honneur du Palais de papes porte elle-même une mémoire… L’intégrez-vous ?
S. McB. : La mise en scène procède par superposition de strates : le jeu des acteurs, l’espace et ses métamorphoses, les images projetées, les multiples narrations des personnages, la 10e symphonie de Chostakovitch… et le lieu de la Cour d’honneur, dont l’histoire résonne singulièrement avec l’épisode de Ponce Pilate. Ces lignes parallèles se combinent pour composer le sens.
