Les mots s’enchâssent, caresses ou froissements d’un instant, s’en retournent et reviennent en tourbillons, cueillent l’éclat heurté d’une sensation, le chatoiement brûlant d’un désir, l’élan aigu d’une révolte… Parfois se dévorent, ou croquent le monde en cruelles satires politiques. C’est que la parole, chez e. e. Cummings (1894-1962), dynamite l’ordre qui voudrait bien tenir la langue, bousculant en toute liberté les règles de ponctuation, d’orthographe et de syntaxe, mais aussi les prudes convenances ferrées sur l’éros. « Je suis quelqu’un qui affirme, fièrement et humblement que l’amour est le mystère-des-mystères, et que rien de ce qui est mesurable n’a la moindre importance » écrivait le poète américain, l’un des plus populaires des années 50. Musicien, metteur en scène, fin lecteur et compositeur d’espace, Alexis Forestier dessine en quelques plans-séquences une traversée du monde de Cummings où s’entrechoquent les tumultes de la nuit, les ombres de la guerre, les pubs new-yorkais et le music-hall, le sexe et l’amour. Surgissant d’un brouillard de machines, les comédiens disent les textes, les scandent, les chantent aussi, et peu à peu les font vibrer comme une ritournelle d’enfance abandonnée.
