Le Baiser de la femme araignée ou dans une moindre mesure La Trahison de Rita Hayworth et Le plus beau Tango du monde, de l’Argentin Manuel Puig (1932-1990) ont connu un succès mondial, mais Le Mystère du bouquet de roses n’a par contre jamais été créé en France. Une motivation supplémentaire pour Gilberte Tsaï, directrice du Centre dramatique national de Montreuil, qui admire particulièrement l’écrivain, et les deux rôles féminins que la pièce propose, « d’une étonnante et passionnante complexité ». Influencé par différentes formes de culture populaire (le roman-feuilleton radiophonique ou télévisé, le tango, la presse féminine, la publicité, etc.), Manuel Puig élabore une œuvre aux accents kitsch faussement glamour, où le goût de la parodie, l’omniprésence de l’ironie et de l’autodérision, tout comme l’originalité des techniques qu’il emploie (collage, réécriture de discours stéréotypés…) permettent .de dévoiler la réalité et le subconscient collectif de la société argentine et d’êtres marginaux. Cette pièce au titre de roman de gare met en présence deux femmes, une patiente fortunée et une infirmière étrange, dont la relation se dessine à travers un dialogue ambigu où le passé surgit par bribes. Un dialogue subtil et hanté, qui parfois se mue en une forme hallucinatoire. Pour interpréter les méandres et l’enchevêtrement de sentiments diffus et parfois opposés, deux très grandes comédiennes à la forte présence, capables d’exprimer les ambiguïtés les plus complexes : Christiane Cohendy et Sylvie Debrun.
