En décembre 2018, Edgar Hilsenrath nous quittait à l’âge de 92 ans, laissant une œuvre importante, dont les romans Fuck America, Le Conte de la pensée dernière et Le Nazi et le Barbier. Dans cet ouvrage, il raconte sous forme de farce grinçante l’histoire de Max Schulz, un aryen pur souche qui s’engage dans les SS, tue des Juifs parmi lesquels son ami d’enfance, puis, la guerre finie, prend l’identité de son ami et devient un sioniste ardent en Palestine. Pour la metteuse en scène Tatiana Werner, il s’agit d’un « récit déjanté. Meurtre, viol, crime de masse, rien n’échappe à la dérision et au sens du grotesque de l’auteur ». C’est pourquoi elle le monte à la manière d’un stand-up où David Nathanson s’adresse au public « avec réalisme et sans fioriture, comme les comiques d’aujourd’hui. » Sur un plateau nu où trône uniquement un fauteuil de barbier, le comédien évoque les trois vies de Max Schultz et les innombrables facettes de ce personnage complexe.
