Un plateau nu, au centre duquel se détache un fauteuil de barbier. C’est le fauteuil que l’on retrouvera dans toutes les étapes de la vie de Max, un jeune « Allemand aryen » qui se lie d’amitié avec Itzig, le fils d’un barbier juif. Quelques années plus tard, engagé dans la S.S., Max devient le bourreau de son ami et de sa famille. Après la guerre, il parvient à échapper à la dénazification en prenant l’identité de celui qu’il avait considéré comme son frère… « Ce qui nous a décidé à entamer ce travail, expliquent David Nathanson et la metteure en scène Tatiana Werner, c’est un coup de foudre pour ce roman (…) qui se coltine la question du génocide en osant l’humour et la farce pour finalement bousculer plus que n’importe quelle autre œuvre sur le sujet. » Porté à la scène à la manière d’un stand-up, Le Nazi et le Barbier nous place face aux paradoxes et aux contradictions d’un homme à l’identité vacillante.
