Jesse van Ruller, 51 ans, Hollandais, a connu son ainé de quelques années, Peter Bernstein, 56 ans, lorsque, jeune étudiant à New York, il le découvrit sur la scène d’un club : « c’était le jeu de guitare le plus swinguant, le plus original, le plus inspiré que j’ai jamais entendu », se souvient-il. De cette révélation est née une amitié entre les deux hommes qui se matérialise parfois par des concerts en tête-à-tête. Admiré notamment de Brad Mehldau, Peter Bernstein incarne avec autant d’élégance que d’inspiration toute la tradition de la guitare jazz, dans la lignée de Wes Montgomery, Jim Hall et autre Kenny Burrell. Plus discret par tempérament, Jesse van Ruller a remporté, en 1995, la compétition Thelonious Monk devant un aréopage composé notamment de Pat Metheny, John Scofield, Jim Hall et Pat Martino… Faut-il en dire davantage ? Les amateurs de guitare ont déjà réservé leurs places ; les autres auraient tort de manquer la conversation de ces géants discrets.
