A l’occasion de la mise en scène de Faces, Daniel Benoin s’est aperçu que son dispositif scénique inventé pour l’adaptation théâtrale du film de Cassavetes constituait le lieu idéal du drame bourgeois : tout se passe au salon : mensonges, agaceries, mauvaise foi et chicaneries des couples en perdition qui faute de s’entendre dans les alcôves se déchirent entre les fauteuils ! Pariant sur la gémellité structurelle entre le cynique Guitry et Cassavetes le désespéré, Daniel Benoin présente leurs deux textes dans le même décor, jouant ainsi des variations sur un même thème, celui de la trahison et du désamour. « La convivialité propre au salon conjugue situation privée et situation publique. Faces est un livret sonore de cris, de rires et de hurlements qui trouve ses marques dans cette proximité avec le public, ce qui m’a paru exactement convenir aux comédies bourgeoises des 19e et 20e siècles. », remarque le metteur en scène qui affirme de ce diptyque qu’il prend « des allures d’étude clinique, presque scientifique, sur le devenir des mots « être ensemble ». »
