Il y a un chef de chantier amateur de flamenco et armé d’un couteau à beurre, un voleur unijambiste affublé d’un haut-de-forme, une vieille dame bouddhiste… Et puis, il y a Viv, une adolescente solitaire qui a un jour décidé de s’exiler dans un immeuble menaçant de s’écrouler. Là, immobile, elle passe ses journées à surveiller sans relâche un point sur le sol : « le point qui, pense-t-elle, tient le monde en équilibre ». Tous ces étranges personnages — « êtres hallucinés cheminant vers la raison » — vont se retrouver pris dans un engrenage qui les mènera au paroxysme de la folie collective, jusqu’à une forme d’apocalypse bouffonne à travers laquelle s’entrechoqueront farce et tragique, onirisme et fantastique. Bien qu’écrite pour les d’adolescents, Le Numéro d’équilibre n’est pas, d’un point de vue de ses thèmes et de son écriture, fondamentalement différente des œuvres plus longues d’Edward Bond. Comme « un détail agrandi » de ces dernières, la pièce aujourd’hui mise en scène par Jérôme Hankins est un exemple de l’intérêt que manifeste, depuis de nombreuses années, le dramaturge britannique pour le théâtre jeune public. Car, selon lui, c’est là que se joue l’émergence d’une nouvelle forme d’art dramatique : un art dramatique capable de rester en dehors des sphères capitalistes et mercantiles pour parvenir à continuer « de créer notre humanité ».
