Volet central de la trilogie des “Coûfontaine“ qui traverse le XIXe siècle, Le Pain dur de Paul Claudel portraitise un monde déserté par les idéaux et les valeurs spirituelles car tout entier tourné vers le matérialisme et le progrès économique. Au-delà, et c’est là que résident la force et l’intérêt de l’œuvre, le drame concentre son énergie sur un microcosme familial, sur des conflits fondamentaux et des appétits contradictoires sans réelle conciliation possible chez des êtres abandonnés à leurs solitudes, sans transcendance consolatrice. La langue éclatante de Claudel, qui dompte et concentre son lyrisme en un resserrement épuré, montre le déchaînement des ambitions, un fils affrontant son vieux père, ancien “boucher de 93“ devenu Préfet de l’Empire. Agathe Alexis et Alain Alexis Barsacq, dont la mise en scène sera aussi présentée à Moscou, soulignent : « Nous sommes portés à considérer avec une grande attention cette fermeture au spirituel, cette place vide au cœur des êtres comme le noyau et le ferment du Pain dur. » Pour s’approcher des âmes au plus près…
