Les comédiens réunis par Agathe Alexis et Alain Alexis Barsacq ont tous un indéniable talent et maîtrisent certainement leur art. Agathe Alexis sait jouer de l’hiératisme et de la morgue ; Tatiana Stepantchenko est élégante entre le feu et la glace ; Robert Bouvier est adroit à suggérer la mâle rusticité de son personnage ; Hervé Van der Meulen parvient à signifier la brutalité et la peur du père assassiné par les siens ; Georges Goubert est habile en procédurier cupide. Hélas, Sichel, Lumir, Louis, Turelure et Ali n’habitent pas ensemble la scène du drame que dessinent leurs rapports, au point tel que les comédiens paraissent indépendants les uns des autres, comme atomisés par un jeu individualiste et mécanique qui dissout la puissance et la complexité des relations entre les personnages. Plus encore qu’un défaut de distribution qui permet mal de comprendre l’âge des protagonistes et la nature de leurs attachements, on peut regretter un manque d’unité et d’harmonie entre les interprétations qui finit par anesthésier l’intensité de cette tragédie où l’argent se joue cyniquement de l’amour, de la piété filial et des valeurs.
Une proposition glacée et disparate
Dans un décor tout en gris, sur fond de bâche en plastique symbolisant les travaux menés par les Coûfontaine pour transformer un antique monastère en fabrique de pâte à papier, un Christ en bronze posé dans un coin, les modifications scéniques se font à vue, par le moyen d’une chorégraphie déroutante, dont le sens n’apparaît pas vraiment. Les acteurs semblent spectateurs les uns des autres, obnubilés par leurs tirades et crispés dans leurs déplacements. En se concentrant sur chaque prestation, on peut apprécier la proposition de l’aristocratique Agathe Alexis, toujours impeccable dans la diction, quoique parfois trop empesée dans le carcan de son jeu, ou celles de ses compagnons, juste par éclairs, mais pour ce qui est de l’ensemble, de la fécondité réflexive, de l’intensité des enjeux et de l’émotion dont ce texte est porteur, force est d’admettre que ce Pain dur laisse un peu sur sa faim…
