Schumann avait pensé d’abord assouvir son envie d’écrire pour la scène à partir d’un conte oriental, raconté par le poète irlandais Thomas Moore. D’opéra, l’ouvrage devint oratorio et fut créé à Leipzig en 1843, le compositeur faisant dès lors reposer ses espoirs d’opéra sur une adaptation de Faust – il lui faudra cependant dix ans pour mener à bien ses Scènes de Faust elles aussi proches plutôt de l’oratorio. Plus encore que dans ses symphonies, Schumann joue dans Le Paradis et la Péri d’une étonnante palette orchestrale et d’une alliance superbe de la voix soliste de la Péri – l’ange déchu cherchant à pénétrer le Paradis – et du chœur des anges dans le finale de chacune des trois parties. Une pléiade de solistes de haut vol donne vie à cette œuvre grandiose, pour laquelle Simon Rattle retrouve les instruments d’époque du remarquable Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment.
