Dans dix ans… Que serons-nous devenus ? Et nos rêves, et nos espérances, et nos douleurs ? Souvent les hasards et petits accommodements quotidiens creusent au jour le jour un chemin bien éloigné du destin que traçaient les désirs de jeunesse. Dans Le passé est un animal grotesque, quatre trentenaires revivent des moments de leur existence, comme dans un film où, tour à tour, ils seraient le narrateur de la vie d’un autre. Dix années défilent ainsi en un long plan séquence, qui tourne de 1999 à 2009. L’un se voyait cinéaste indépendant et vante aujourd’hui les mérites d’une marque de bière, déguisé en cow-boy dans un studio de Los Angeles. Une autre fantasmait une vie de bohème parisienne et fait la comédienne dans un parc à thème. Et ainsi de suite. Le monde change, les êtres se heurtent à la réalité, et changent aussi. Les vies se font et se défont sans cesse. Pour Mariano Pensotti, « le passé, l’expérience vécue, ne cesse de se transformer chaque fois que nous le racontons. ». Le théâtre s’offre ici comme tentative de reconstruction d’un passé dont les fragments épars attendent le fil qui les reliera.
