« Aujourd’hui encore, l’imaginaire collectif autour d’Erik Satie est très fort, à la fois transgénérationnel et transculturel, ce qui le rend peut-être plus « facile » à adapter pour un spectacle que Mozart, Bach ou Stravinsky par exemple. Pour autant, le personnage est tellement décalé qu’il est facile de se perdre dans sa musique, ses textes, sa pensée, dans toutes ces pistes qu’il amorce. Pour le spectacle, nous nous sommes beaucoup appuyés sur ce personnage même du « Maître d’Arcueil », un homme toujours à part, autodidacte. Il sera très présent à travers ses textes, par la bouche du comédien Gilles Arbona. Il a aussi orienté le « casting » : nous voulions d’excellents musiciens, mais qui aient aussi un côté fantaisiste. C’est le cas du saxophoniste Christophe Monniot, qui pourrait refléter certaines facettes de Satie. De même, Alfred Spirli est poète autant que batteur, avec ce côté Facteur Cheval que partage Satie. Entouré de ses objets poétiques et musicaux, Alfred sera un peu le « domestique » de Gilles Arbona.
Petites formes et improvisation
Musicalement, nous allons bien sûr traiter les grands « tubes » comme les Gnossiennes et les Gymnopédies, mais avec plus ou moins de décalage, un peu à la manière cubiste. Je propose par exemple une version assez « hard » de la Gnossienne III, avec batterie très appuyée, et dans « Les courses » des Sports et divertissements, je ne retiens qu’une phrase de main gauche… Les petites formes, parfois juste une esquisse, laissent beaucoup de latitude à l’improvisation. Michel Mandel a, quant à lui, insisté sur le côté mécanique, prémonitoire de la musique répétitive, tel qu’on le trouve dans les Vexations.»
