Rare au concert, Krystian Zimerman fait partie de ces artistes méticuleux qui mûrissent intensément leur approche des œuvres avant de les livrer au public et au disque. Plus de quinze ans après un enregistrement des pièces pour violon et piano de Szymanowski aux côtés de Kaja Danczowska, il grave un condensé de l’œuvre pour piano solo du compositeur polonais, couvrant l’ensemble de sa vie créatrice, depuis les 9 Préludes op. 1 jusqu’aux 20 Mazurkas op. 50, en passant par le cycle Masques, qui s’inscrit, avec Métopes et Mythes, dans une trilogie marquée par l’inspiration méditerranéenne, et lui a valu d’être comparé à l’impressionnisme suggestif de Debussy. Si l’écriture de Szymanowski se nourrit d’influences littéraires, elle se soumet à des formes concentrées que Chopin, entre autres, avait portées à leur accomplissement. Elle rejoint ainsi l’inlassable exploration des ressources de la musique pure par Bach, chez lequel didactique et profondeur spirituelle ne font qu’un.
