Si Joey Alexander n’est plus l’enfant prodige de ses débuts, il n’en reste pas moins un cas à part dans le circuit du jazz, lui qui maîtrise à un âge où l’on use habituellement ses culottes sur les bancs des conservatoires le langage du jazz et la technique du piano de manière éblouissante. Alors que vient de sortir « Origin », qui est déjà son sixième album (!), le pianiste originaire de Jakarta et désormais basé à New York confirme que son talent n’était pas un feu de paille mais qu’il est un « sérieux client » dans sa catégorie, pétri du style des grands pianistes (la triade Herbie Hancock-Chick Corea-Keith Jarrett) dont il est un émule brillant. Toucher sûr, attaque vive, goût pour les introductions développées et les mises en place précises, Joey Alexander manifeste des qualités qui en font un pianiste fascinant à suivre et à écouter.
