Thierry Malandain est connu pour les dialogues qu’il se plaît à instaurer entre une danse que l’on pourrait qualifier de « néo-classique » et des références issues de différentes époques historiques : il interroge ici différents aspects du patrimoine et de l’imaginaire espagnols. Pour Le Portrait de l’infante, il a choisi de collaborer avec le sculpteur Manolo Valdés, dont Les Ménines font écho à celles de Vélasquez. Seize danseurs, qui semblent sortis du tableau de Vélasquez, se fondent dans la musique de Ravel. En deuxième partie, L’Amour sorcier nous transporte chez les Gitans d’Andalousie : le spectre d’un amant mort surgit chaque fois qu’un autre tente de prendre sa place. Le charme sera rompu lorsque la jeune Gitane sera parvenue à détourner l’attention du revenant vers une autre jeune fille… Dans ce monde de superstition et de sorcellerie, la danse apparaît comme un moyen d’expression évident, qui révèle à la fois la sensualité et la rébellion.
