Pourquoi mettre en scène Disgrâce ? Partagez-vous ce regard sur le monde ?
Kornél Mundruczo : J’ai été touché par l’écriture de Disgrâce, et tellement troublé par la profondeur des personnages que j’ai lu tous les ouvrages disponibles de Coetzee. La griffe littéraire dans l’exactitude des faits relatés, sans la moindre compassion à l’égard des hommes, m’a intéressé, et j’ai aussi été attiré par la vulnérabilité apparente de ces figures romanesques dont les questions existentielles appartiennent à notre génération. La disparité entre justice et injustice n’a jamais été résolue. Je compare ce pays du continent noir avec la situation de la Hongrie d’aujourd’hui. Le roman évoque une expérience humaine similaire, même si l’Afrique du Sud et l’apartheid sont plutôt éloignés de la Hongrie.
Quel est le point de vue essentiel de ce roman ?
K. M. : La question se résume à la façon dont un homme d’esprit se rapproche de la vérité du terrain, de sa réalité. Comment un intellectuel blanc peut-il quitter son environnement familier et le monde des idées auquel il appartient ? Que peut attendre un colon blanc dans le désert où il échoue à la fin de sa vie ? Sera-t-il capable de reconsidérer son complexe de supériorité ? Partira-t-il ou restera-t-il ? Sera-t-il en mesure de contrecarrer un monde d’impossibilité et d’injustice ?
Comment avez-vous adapté le roman pour la scène ?
K. M. : L’équipe avec laquelle je travaille est inventive. Nous avons parlé de Disgrâce durant quatre semaines, tout en nous documentant. Soit un temps de véritable inspiration où il était bon d’observer l’excitation de chacun face à ce roman riche et cruel. Au lieu de prendre appui sur le texte seul, l’objectif a été de créer une vision, notre Afrique du Sud à nous, un cauchemar que nous avons rêvé. Nous avons voulu réinventer une expérience et non pas interpréter un texte à thèse.
Comment le spectacle parle-t-il de nos temps actuels de violence ?
K. M. : La pièce est une réflexion sur le pouvoir de la violence, sur la pression subie, et sur les conflits historiques irréversibles. La violence au quotidien est une réponse à ce qui a été fabriqué, elle est une sorte de “justice injuste“. Il s’agit ici de se poser la question de l’animal qui est en nous. Quelle sorte d’animal sommes-nous ?
