« Marivaux sur un air de mambo ? Et pourquoi pas… » demande le metteur en scène Jean-Luc Revol, qui choisit de transposer la pièce de Marivaux dans les années cinquante, période transitoire vers la modernité et l’émancipation, tout comme le monde de Marivaux, en plein bouillonnement pré-révolutionnaire, et comme le théâtre de Marivaux, où le sentiment amoureux révèle les êtres à eux-mêmes et s’affirme comme un formidable vecteur d’épanouissement personnel, pour les hommes et les femmes (ce qui est une vision très progressiste à l’époque). Angélique et Dorante s’aiment, mais elle ne veut pas épouser un bourgeois mais un aristocrate… Ciel bleu tranquille, couleurs acidulées, musique et danse… et des êtres prisonniers d’un enfermement. Ici le chemin vers la sincérité et la lucidité, semé d’embûches, entraîne une complexe découverte de soi contre les préjugés, une lutte contre soi et les autres, contre les attendus et les codes établis. Le corps et le cœur en savent plus que les mots, qui se refusent souvent à l’évidence, et la mise en scène célèbre joyeusement la liberté sous-jacente…
