« Le Prince est un texte que tout le monde pense plus ou moins connaître, mais qui est finalement assez peu lu. C’est un texte fondamentalement ambivalent : en même temps qu’il a pour objet l’éducation politique des princes, il porte à la connaissance du peuple l’art du gouvernement et, par là même, fait prendre conscience au peuple des opérations de domination dont il est l’objet. Au cœur du texte de Machiavel, il y a donc la notion d’éducation politique. C’est pourquoi dans le spectacle, nous développons la situation d’un stage de formation pour futurs princes. Face à deux formateurs, dont l’un est dépositaire de la parole de Machiavel, trois stagiaires sont confrontés à un certain nombre de mises en situation censées leur enseigner comment prendre le pouvoir et comment le garder. Ce qui ressort de ces jeux, c’est que le pouvoir est par nature instable : on est assuré de le perdre un jour. Machiavel est habituellement considéré comme un cynique, un théoricien d’un pouvoir qui n’aurait d’autre finalité que lui-même. Mais sa parole est d’abord celle d’un homme qui a foi dans la force du politique et refuse donc catégoriquement toute forme d’idéalisme. »
