Célèbre pour les Danses polovtsiennes de son deuxième acte, jouées souvent en concert symphonique, monument inachevé du répertoire lyrique russe, Le Prince Igor n’est pas si souvent monté sur les scènes françaises. L’Opéra de Paris en présente une nouvelle production placée sous la direction musicale de Philippe Jordan et mise en scène par Barrie Kosky, l’inventif directeur de la Komische Oper Berlin, trop rare sur les scènes françaises. C’est la deuxième fois, après ses Boréades à l’Opéra de Dijon au printemps dernier, que l’Australien monte une production française. « Comme de nombreux opéras russes Le Prince Igor est inachevé, c’est un chef-d’œuvre mais comme un buste inachevé, comme ces sculptures de Michel Ange qui émergent de la pierre … » explique-t-il en évoquant une « œuvre magnifique, épique, immense, qui contient une éclipse de soleil, des scènes de guerre, d’orgies et des ballets spectaculaires… » Mais pour Barrie Kosky la dimension à explorer, loin de tout folklore et aspects spectaculaires factices, c’est bien celle des êtres humains qui habitent l’œuvre, en particulier le Prince Igor (qu’incarnera Evgeny Nikitin), dont il souhaite éclairer les failles et les doutes : « C’est une histoire sur l’identité, sur la recherche d’un sens dans un monde terrible…» explique le metteur en scène australien.
