« L’écriture d’Elie-Georges Berreby est sobre et dense, rien n’est jamais inutile. Ses personnages — sortes de Roméo et Juliette des années 1960 — dialoguent, se repoussent, se cherchent, se blessent, se charment. Comme souvent dans la vie et dans les romans, les deux protagonistes principaux d’Une Vie algérienne commencent par traverser des sentiments d’hostilité, et quand l’amour les réunit enfin, les embûches surgissent de l’extérieur. Cette difficile histoire d’amour se déroule sur un fond historique que l’auteur connaît bien, et qui offre de nombreuses résonnances avec l’actualité des printemps arabes. On y observe comment les peuples, et surtout les femmes, voient confisquée la liberté qu’ils croyaient avoir gagnée. Suivant une construction assez cinématographique, Une Vie algérienne déploie une succession rapide de scènes brèves qui se situent dans des lieux différents. J’ai répondu à ce défi par un autre : suggérer huit espaces avec six cubes que les acteurs sont amenés à disposer de différentes façons au cours de la représentation. J’ai dirigé Géraldine Dabat, Jérôme Sitruk et Renaud Farah en donnant l’absolue priorité au texte, en recherchant l’expression permanente des sous-entendus et des émotions. »
