Les représentations du Prisonnier de Dallapiccola au Théâtre du Châtelet en 1992, avaient montré l’extraordinaire efficacité dramatique de cet opéra en un prologue et un acte long d’à peine plus de trois quarts d’heure. Œuvre extrêmement structurée, entrecoupée de saisissants intermèdes choraux, Il Prigioniero est l’un des sommets lyriques du xxe siècle, dans la lignée du Wozzeck de Berg (à l’affiche de l’Opéra Bastille jusqu’au 16 avril). Le livret, inspiré au compositeur par un « conte cruel » de Villiers de l’Isle-Adam, La Torture par l’espérance, avait trouvé en 1992 une illustration magnifique dans la mise en scène de Bernard Sobel, suivant le cheminement du protagoniste vers une liberté illusoire. C’est un autre homme de théâtre, Lluis Pasqual, ancien directeur du Théâtre de l’Odéon, qu’a choisi l’Opéra de Paris pour cette nouvelle production. Le baryton-basse Evgeny Nikitin, qui était Klingsor dans Parsifal en mars à l’Opéra Bastille, tient le rôle-titre, entouré de la mezzo Rosalind Plowright et du ténor Chris Merritt. Dirigé par un spécialiste, Lothar Zagrosek, l’opéra sera précédé de l’Ode à Napoléon Bonaparte de Schoenberg.
