Composé en 1788, le Quatuor en sol majeur op. 54 n°1, qui présente la particularité d’enchaîner quatre mouvements aux tempi allants ou vifs, appartient aux œuvres de la maturité où Haydn, maîtrisant les formes classiques, en expérimente les possibilités. Un siècle plus tard, Wolf, disciple de Wagner passé à la postérité pour son corpus de Lieder, écrivait ce qui reste sa page instrumentale la plus connue, une brève Sérénade italienne marquée par une faconde mélodique toute méditerranéenne. Complice de longue date des Modigliani, Jean-Frédéric Neuburger, auquel le Louvre a consacré une carte blanche en 2014, leur a dédié une nouvelle pièce qui sera donnée en première française. Le concert se referme sur le Quintette n°2 en la majeur op.81 de Dvorak, un des sommets les plus joués du répertoire chambriste, où l’on reconnaît l’inimitable inspiration mélodique et rythmique du compositeur tchèque, dans lequel Jean-François Neuburger rejoindra au piano les pupitres du quatuor à cordes.
