Après L’Héritage en 1997, un collage de divers textes en 1999 (Fragments Koltès), après La Nuit juste avant les forêts en 2007, Catherine Marnas revient à l’œuvre de Bernard-Marie Koltès en investissant Le Retour au désert. A travers ce spectacle métissé, bilingue, au sein duquel « acteurs français et brésiliens se partagent une partition dédoublée », la metteure en scène a souhaité éclairer tous les possibles du texte. « Je fais jouer les débordements de l’inconscient, confie-t-elle, quelque chose que le diurne ne dirait pas et que le nocturne raconte. » Evoquant ce qui est et ce qui n’est pas, le visible et l’invisible, toutes les facettes des personnages, la représentation élaborée par Catherine Marnas se laisse également traverser par les profonds déséquilibres qui caractérisent la société brésilienne. « Le Brésil éclaire ce que la pièce raconte, explique-t-elle, l’histoire d’un monde bourgeois, aux abris, enfermé en lui-même, retranché derrière ses murs. »
