Depuis quelques années, la musique contemporaine est aux abonnés absents à Avignon. Si le Festival aime tisser des liens avec la danse ou les arts visuels, il semble frileux face à la création musicale. Est-ce pour ne pas concurrencer son prestigieux voisin d’Aix-en-Provence ? Les choses n’ont pas toujours été ainsi. Il y a plus de vingt ans, en 1989, était créé un opéra au Festival d’Avignon : Roméo et Juliette. Une œuvre composée par Pascal Dusapin, qui avait choisi pour l’écriture du livret un certain Olivier Cadiot. Drôle de retournement : cette année, c’est Olivier Cadiot, artiste associé du Festival, qui invite Pascal Dusapin au Festival à l’occasion de deux concerts. « L’idée d’aller en Avignon me rend fou de joie, nous dit Pascal Dusapin. C’est un lieu parfaitement adapté à la musique contemporaine, car il y a de vrais débats, des réflexions politiques au sens large. On trouve difficilement cela dans les institutions musicales, souvent très conventionnelles. Avignon doit revenir à la musique ».
Création pour clarinette basse
C’est une longue histoire qui unit Pascal Dusapin et Olivier Cadiot. « On a vécu quatorze ans ensemble dans un atelier de 500 m2 que l’on avait divisé en quatre parties, poursuit Pascal Dusapin. Mais surtout, c’est la plus grande rencontre artistique de ma vie et aussi la personne la plus drôle que j’ai jamais connue ». Outre Roméo et Juliette, le duo Dusapin-Cadiot s’est retrouvé sur le Requiem et sur différentes pièces de musique de chambre. A chaque fois, c’est une alliance subtile et très poétique qui relie les mots et les notes. On ne peut s’empêcher de penser aux couples historiques de compositeurs et de librettistes : Mozart-Da Ponte, Strauss-Hofmannsthal… Les deux concerts programmés permettront de parcourir l’œuvre de Dusapin sous différents angles. Avec l’Ensemble Accroche Note, la musique de chambre est à l’honneur au Cloître des Carmes, avec notamment une création pour clarinette basse. Le Temple Saint-Martial accueille, de son côté, un rapprochement étonnant entre la musique de Dusapin et celle de Bach avec l’organiste Bernard Foccroulle. En attendant, pour les prochaines années, une nouvelle œuvre du binôme Dusapin-Cadiot ? « On parle de refaire un opéra », nous glisse le compositeur.
