Et si les hommes vivaient libres, bons et heureux ? Ce rêve, c’est celui du héros de la nouvelle de Dostoïevski, un homme qui n’est jamais nommé sinon par ce qualificatif : il est ridicule. Mais il n’est pas que cela : c’est aussi un homme lassé du monde qui veut se suicider. Le jour où il décide d’accomplir son projet, il rencontre sur le chemin une petite fille qui l’appelle à l’aide, sa mère étant mourante. Il reste sourd à son appel mais une fois rentré chez lui, rongé par la culpabilité, il ne se suicide pas, s’endort et fait ce rêve d’une société harmonieuse. À son réveil, il est porteur d’un projet : prêcher la vérité entrevue dans son sommeil. Jean-Paul Sermadiras, qui interprète ce monologue, a été sensible à ce personnage en quête de transcendance. Sur le plateau nu, il donne corps à ce texte qu’Olivier Ythier a travaillé comme « une interpellation du réel par le rêve, ou plutôt [comme un] affrontement. »
