Comment reconnaître le revizor quand il arrivera, comment l’amadouer et comment lui cacher la gestion catastrophique de la bourgade ? Quiproquo : un jeune homme arrive à l’auberge du village et tous le prennent pour l’inspecteur dont on craint le rapport quand il constatera la gabegie du gouverneur et des notables. Affolement général ! Le faux revizor se prend au jeu et s’amuse de la méprise dont il est à la fois la victime et le bénéficiaire. Reprenant la traduction de Prosper Mérimée en l’élaguant, Ronan Rivière signe une adaptation qui se concentre sur cinq des personnages de la pièce. Après avoir éclairé la folie de l’administration et les abus de pouvoir avec Courteline et Mirbeau, le collectif VdP s’empare tout naturellement de cette pièce et de sa galerie de monstres sympathiques. « Du sombre à l’éclatant, du réalisme au fantastique », se construit « un univers esthétique, sonore et dramatique » autour de la question du mal et de son incarnation vénale.
