La simplicité mélodique des airs composés par Arthur Honegger pour son « psaume symphonique » Le Roi David a largement contribué au succès immédiat du compositeur, tout comme elle a sans doute provoqué son effacement relatif depuis quelques décennies. Il ne faut pas s’y méprendre pourtant : si la musique se veut immédiatement accessible, comme le texte de René Morax, dans l’esprit des mystères médiévaux ou du théâtre de tréteaux, elle ne renonce en rien au goût d’Honegger pour la rigueur du contrepoint, sensible dans la moindre fanfare, ou pour la clarté de l’orchestration. Recommandé par Stravinsky et le chef Ernest Ansermet, Arthur Honegger, alors âgé de vingt-neuf ans dut composer pour un chœur amateur monumental et un modeste ensemble de dix-sept musiciens. C’est cette version originale de 1921 que Matthias Brauer dirige à la tête de son Chœur de Radio France, rejoint par des musiciens du Philharmonique.
