Chabrier réécrit l’histoire à sa façon et réinvente dans cet ouvrage épatant le roi Henri de Valois – fils de Catherine de Médicis, frère de Charles IX – qui, sur le point d’être couronné roi de Pologne en 1573, se met à rêver d’amour plus que de gloire et préfère se défiler devant l’histoire en mettant quelqu’un d’autre à sa place sur le trône. Personnalité majeure de la musique française à la fin du XIXè siècle, Emmanuel Chabrier (1841-1894) reste un compositeur terriblement sous-estimé par le monde musical français. Son humour dévastateur, sa gouaille provinciale et sa modestie (il resta fonctionnaire au ministère de l’Intérieur jusqu’à l’âge de 40 ans…) y sont sûrement pour beaucoup. « Je rythme ma musique avec mes sabots d’Auvergnat » prétendait-il ainsi de manière trompeuse…

Sa musique admirablement charpentée, aux ancrages rythmiques solides, est en effet dans le même temps un modèle de vivacité, d’invention, de brio orchestral, de mise en couleurs et de pétillement. Profondément fasciné par Wagner, ami proche des plus grands peintres de son temps (Manet, Fantin-Latour, Renoir, Monet, etc…), il fut admiré par Debussy, Ravel ou Poulenc et eut sur eux une influence évidente. Ravel disait souvent « que la première du Roi malgré lui a changé l’orientation de l’harmonie française ». « Ces accords aux résonances jusqu’alors jamais entendues ont servi de guide à Debussy et à Ravel » confirmait Poulenc. L’apparition sur la scène de Favart de cet ouvrage dans la mise en scène de Laurent Pelly, unanimement saluée lors de la création de la production en 2005, est un vrai bonheur et un juste retour des choses pour cette « perle authentique » (Stravinski) et son génial auteur trop longtemps oublié des grandes scènes lyriques hexagonales… Avec William Lacey (direction musicale), les Chœurs de l’Opéra national de Lyon, l’Orchestre de Paris et les voix de Jean-Sébastien Bou, Magali Léger, Franck Leguérinel, Sophie Marin-Degor, Gordon Gietz et Nabil Suliman.
