Ecrite en 1934, alors que Joseph Staline a, depuis plusieurs années, imposé son autorité sur l’Union soviétique, la première pièce pour adultes d’Evgueni Schwartz tente de dissimuler ses prises de positions politiques derrière des allures de conte pour enfants inoffensif. Cette manœuvre n’a néanmoins pas suffi à mettre l’auteur russe à l’abri de la censure, puisque Le Roi nu — pièce interdite avant même d’avoir pu voir le jour sur scène — ne sera présentée au public soviétique que 23 ans plus tard. On dit pourtant que ce n’est pas la figure de Joseph Staline qu’Evgueni Schwartz visait à travers cette charge masquée contre la sujétion de l’individu, contre la tyrannie exercée par les régimes totalitaires, mais celle d’Adolphe Hitler. Conscient de l’esprit de sédition qu’exhale cette fable politique construite à partir de trois contes d’Andersen (Le Porcher amoureux, La Princesse au petit pois et Les Habits neufs de l’empereur), le pouvoir soviétique a cependant décidé d’en interdire la représentation théâtrale, comme il le fera plus tard pour deux autres pièces de l’auteur : L’Ombre et Le Dragon.
Un univers de farce qui étouffe le politique
Dans Le Roi nu, Evgueni Schwartz fait donc s’entrecroiser trois contes pour n’en former qu’un seul : l’histoire d’une princesse éprise d’un porcher. Une princesse dont le père s’oppose à cet amour, destinant sa fille au monarque d’un état voisin — un homme âgé, laid et despotique. Mais, le jeune porcher met en place un stratagème pour empêcher l’union forcée de sa bien-aimée. Derrière toutes ces aventures de personnages de conte, se dessine une satire sociale et politique pleine de mordant. Une dénonciation en règle des abus de pouvoir et des outrances des régimes autocratiques, dénonciation qui associe ironie et venin contestataire. Se fourvoyant dans une cavalcade d’effets épais et caricaturaux, la représentation conçue par Philippe Awat n’investit que les accents comiques du Roi nu, et encore sans beaucoup de réussite. Face aux excès d’un spectacle qui donne dans la démesure burlesque, on a ainsi bien du mal à saisir la dimension politique de l’œuvre d’Evgueni Schwartz. Or, sans cette dimension, le Roi nu ne s’apparente qu’à une petite fable pour enfants. Une fable manquant singulièrement d’intérêt.
